Placeable
Placeable; a conversation about risk, faith, creativity, and the neighborhood church.
This is our next Parish Collective Portland gathering where we link across our metro area to talk about how we can root deeper into our neighborhoods. We’re really excited to have with us, Mark Scandrette, director of ReIMAGINE! and Dwight Friesen, professor of contextual theology at Mars Hill Graduate School.
Mark will share his story of conversion to “place,” the risks of experimenting, and joys of creativity in mission. (check this video if you haven’t seen it yet). Dwight will bring his vast experience in stimulating discussion and facilitating idea generation. Together they’ll help us imagine new possibilities in neighborhood church.
Friday, April 15 · 7:00pm – 9:00pm

The Walkable Church
Metrospiritual Lecture Series
In the 20th century with the rise of the automobile it brought about a restructuring and reorientation in North American cities. Cities transitioned from being pedestrian-scale to the focus on drivability as the growth edge of cities hurtled outward. Along with this seismic shift arose the notion of the commuter church where it is not uncommon for people to drive great lengths to be part of a local church. However, where is the investment in the local neighborhood? The Walkable Church is about recapturing the grassroots neighborhood emphasis of the local church. What if a church was truly rooted in a neighborhood? What is more people walked or biked to local gatherings? What would that change?
